So, a split personality occurrence takes place as he comes to form, becomes the One. As is seen later on in the story that Smith begins to take over the world even the machine city. This allows Neo to negotiate a peace for the survival of Zion against its planned annihilation by the architect. The One was supposed to aid this demise of Zion, as was fulfilled by Neo’s 5 predecessors but Neo fails to comply and revolts against the machines, which leads to the beginning of the end for everyone until nothing survives, that was the power of the One! But Neo & Trinity travel to the machine city amidst the invasion and barely surviving the machines get to enter it with the death of Trinity. Neo battered though still resolute enters the Matrix to fight Smith who is now all powerful like him and defeats Neo, thus gets killed by the machines with the death of Neo.
